چکیده

This paper describes a stylized model of internally displaced person (IDP) dynamics in East Africa. Displaced people often require support from national governments, international agencies or major non-governmental organizations. Anticipating the timing and magnitude of displacement events, as well as the likely locations to which displaced people will move would be of great interest to the various organizations tasked with managing such events. The paper examines three alternative modeling frameworks based on a pruned spatial interaction model, a local interaction model, and a hybrid of these two approaches. Each of the pure approaches is found to have limitations that can be overcome by adopting the hybrid approach.

Simulation and Evaluation of Urban Development Scenarios Using Integration of Cellular Automata Model and Game Theory

Urban growth is a dynamic and evolutionary spatial and social process that relates to the changes of urban spatial units and the transformation of people’s lifestyles and consequently demographic changes. Considering the urban development process as a function of land uses interactions, population structure and the strategic behavior of the agents involved in the urban development process (the ...

"Space, the Final Frontier": How Good are Agent-Based Models at Simulating Individuals and Space in Cities?

Cities are complex systems, comprising of many interacting parts. How we simulate and understand causality in urban systems is continually evolving. Over the last decade the agent-based modeling (ABM) paradigm has provided a new lens for understanding the effects of interactions of individuals and how through such interactions macro structures emerge, both in the social and physical environment...

On the crack propagation modeling of hydraulic fracturing by a hybridized displacement discontinuity/boundary collocation method

Numerical methods such as boundary element and finite element methods are widely used for the stress analysis in solid mechanics. This study presents boundary element method based on the displacement discontinuity formulation to solve general problems of interaction between hydraulic fracturing and discontinuities. The crack tip element and a higher order boundary displacement collocation techn...

PolicySpace: a modeling platform

Public Policy involves proposing changes to existing practices, alternatives, new habits. Citizens and institutions react accordingly, accepting, refuting or adapting. Agent-based modeling is a tool that can enrich the policy analysis package explicitly considering dynamics, space and individual-level interactions. This paper presents a modeling platform called PolicySpace that models public po...

Modeling inequality levels with the help of spatial and non-spatial indices in northern Khorasan

This paper aims to explain the inequality and imbalance in the developmental levels of 6 selected cities in North Khorasan. The paper seeks to answer these two questions as to whether the spatial and non-spatial indices in regional disparities have an effect on equality? And can we achieve a functional model based on the evaluation of indicators? In order to achieve the goal and the answer to t...
